Celebrating Christ in the Midst of Challenges

Greetings, friends!
As we reflect on this past week and the final days of 2024, my heart is full of gratitude for the joy of Christmas, even as we face significant challenges.
Babies were fed this holiday week, ensuring the most vulnerable didn't suffer from hunger during the holidays.
In Haiti, Christmas and year-end celebrations brought a much-needed sense of hope and community. Our schools hosted beautiful Christmas parties with decorations, gifts, and heartfelt speeches. These moments are reminders of the goodness of God.
At MOHI in Thozin, a special Christmas concert showcased the talents of local church groups, including the women’s ministry teams. It was a beautiful time of worship and fellowship, where the presence of the Lord was deeply felt. Moments like these remind us that even in difficult circumstances, the joy of the Lord remains our strength.
Unfortunately, the security situation in Haiti continues to deteriorate. This past week, gangs attacked another major hospital in Port-au-Prince, claiming several lives. At sea, conditions have also been perilous. A small ship capsized just days ago, resulting in a tragic loss of life. On the roads, the recently released report from the Association of Owners and Drivers of Haiti painted a grim picture of the year:
30 drivers killed
576 freight trucks set on fire
246 freight trucks completely destroyed
167 freight trucks robbed
200 public transportation passengers kidnapped
22 passengers killed, with 46 more wounded
Our hearts go out to so many victims and their families.
Despite these realities, we stand firm in knowing that God is with us. Proverbs 3:5-6 reminds us to, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways submit to Him, and He will make your paths straight.” Every day, we lean into His wisdom, knowing He leads us to the right places and the right people at the right time.
On a personal note, Lex and I had a delightful Christmas season. The highlight for me was watching two of our grandchildren sing in their church’s children’s choir. I am, of course, a very proud grandma, but they truly did an lovely job!
And I must mention that our neice, Terri Phna is all the way on the right in the photo below. She made us all very proud, too!
As we look ahead to 2025, I’ve been reflecting on 2024 with a heart full of praise. God has been so faithful to MOHI. The journey hasn’t always been easy—at times, it’s been downright scary—but we’ve seen His hand of provision, protection, and peace throughout.
The Bible reminds us, “Whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him” (Colossians 3:17). Your prayers, encouragement, and generosity have been a testament to this truth. Together, we are making an eternal impact on the lives of children, families, and communities in Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
Next week, I’ll share some of the highlights from 2024 and give you a glimpse of what’s ahead for 2025. I hope you’ll join us as we continue this journey of faith and service together.
From our family to yours, thank you for all you do to glorify the Lord and care for His people. “Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and He will reward them for what they have done” (Proverbs 19:17). May the New Year be one of peace, prosperity, health, and gratitude.
